FaZe Clan made history by winning the first Counter-Strike 2 tournament at IEM Sydney 2023

FaZe Clan have become the champions of the first major LAN event for Counter-Strike 2, the Intel Extreme Masters Sydney 2023, after defeating Complexity Gaming in a thrilling best-of-three series that went to double-overtime on the final map. The European squad, led by Finn “karrigan” Andersen, showed their dominance and resilience throughout the tournament, overcoming teams like Team Vitality, Natus Vincere, and MOUZ on their way to the grand final.

IEM Sydney 2023 Final

The grand final was a clash of two titans, as Complexity Gaming, the North American powerhouse, had also impressed with their performance in the group stage and the playoffs, beating teams like ENCE, Fnatic, and G2 Esports. The series started on Complexity’s map pick, Overpass, where they managed to edge out a close 16-14 victory over FaZe Clan, thanks to the stellar performance of former Liquid member Jonathan “EliGE” Jablonowski, who had a 70-55 K-D and a 1.32 rating.

However, FaZe Clan bounced back on their map pick, Nuke, where they dominated the first half with an 8-4 lead on the T side. Complexity tried to mount a comeback on their own T side, but FaZe Clan’s AWPer Helvijs “broky” Saukants was too much to handle, as he secured a 13-10 win for his team with a 1.23 rating and a K-D of 65-57. Broky also earned the MVP title for his consistent performance throughout the tournament.

The third and final map was Ancient, the newest addition to the CS2 map pool. FaZe Clan looked comfortable on their CT side, securing a 9-3 lead over Complexity. However, Complexity did not give up easily, as they rallied back with a 9-3 half of their own on their CT side, forcing the game into overtime. The North Americans survived the first overtime, but could not stop FaZe Clan from closing out the game in the second one, losing 19-16 in a nail-biting finish.

FaZe Clan have made history by winning the first Counter-Strike 2 tournament at IEM Sydney 2023, and have also earned themselves $100,000 and a spot at IEM Katowice 2024. Complexity Gaming has also shown that they are a force to be reckoned with in the new era of CS2, and has taken home $42,000 for their second-place finish. The next major LAN event for CS2 will be BLAST.tv Premier Fall Finals in November, where both teams will have another chance to prove themselves on the big stage.
