Jujutsu Kaisen: Never let anyone tell you that animation is simple. Whether in America or Japan, animated titles require a tremendous amount of effort and ability to complete. Given the expanding popularity of anime, you might think the industry has its labor conditions under control, but this is far from the reality. The anime business has always been criticized for its working conditions, and following the second season of Jujutsu Kaisen, one very gifted artist is sharing their experience on the program.

Lí Cree shared an educational diary on YouTube about their work on Jujutsu Kaisen, providing an update. The video, which you can watch above, follows Cree’s work on the anime during season two. They delivered some amazing cuts in episodes 36 and 39. And, while they admit that work on Jujutsu Kaisen season two was “intense,” they make it plain that MAPPA Studios deserves no criticism.

“What I experienced on the program was… certainly, intense, even when compared to other anime on which I have worked. It wasn’t good. There is just one way to describe it: it was bad. However, when compared to working on American production, it borders on breaking labor laws according to American standards. However, when I compare it to other Japanese studios I’ve dealt with, it was really poor. But I am nonetheless grateful for the experience because few individuals in the world can say they have worked on Jujutsu Kaisen. “I’m not going to knock it for what it was,” Cree stated.

As the movie progresses, Cree discusses some of the challenges they encountered while working on Jujutsu Kaisen. MAPPA Studios was extremely busy throughout the Shibuya Incident arc, with tight deadlines and last-minute tasks. Cree goes on to explore the tough balance between job and personal life when it comes to anime. This problem affects part-time freelancers, so you can only imagine how divided full-time anime artists are.

There is no simple solution to the issues afflicting the anime business, yet burnout is already occurring. The medium’s success has prompted studios to generate more, but artists can only take so much. The resistance MAPPA Studios received from artists on Jujutsu Kaisen season two was not unusual; it simply happened to be a high-profile show that offered animators a platform to tell their truth. So, while the anime crunch continues, show your support for the artists working hard to bring your favorite series to life.
