Counter Strike 2 was announced by Valve in March, and it’s one of those delightfully esoteric competitive game sequels that outsiders might look at with tilted heads, wondering what the hell makes it different from the Counter-Strike people are playing now, while residents like resident PC Gamer CS player Rich Stanton dub it their “dream game” because the smoke grenades are different.

Of course, I’m joking. It’s not only new smoke grenades; they’re also revamping several maps. But, truly, the changes and engine improvements are significant in a competitive game that has been impressively stable over more than two decades. The present version, Counter Strike: Global Offensive, is more than ten years old, and its reign appears to be coming to an end with the release of CS2 next week on Wednesday, September 27. If this six-word tweet from the official Counter-Strike account is any indication,

Counter-Strike 2: Twitter Handle Asks

What are you doing next Wednesday?” was the only thing said, although it’s a very standard Valve manner of announcing a release date. The business had stated that CS2 would be released this summer, but last week it stated that it would be released “soon.” Summer formally ends on September 23, so next Wednesday really makes it late, if we’re being picky.

Counter-Strike 2 is currently in a “Limited Test” closed beta that requires an invite to join, though Valve announced at the end of last month that it had begun inviting “as many eligible players as possible” to play. Valve also unveiled a few more enhancements at the time, including a revamped ranking system and shorter matches, which Rich deconstructed.

When Counter-Strike 2 is fully released, it will be a free update to CS: GO, and all skins will be carried over. More information about what’s new in Counter-Strike 2 can be found on the official website.

Except for the Nexon spin-off Counter-Strike Online 2 and the informal version number usage in “Counter-Strike 1.6,” this is the first numbered Counter-Strike game. Counter-Strike, Counter-Strike: Condition Zero, Counter-Strike Source, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, and Counter-Strike 2 are now the primary series’ progressions.
