The End of an Era: Rekkles and Fnatic Part Ways
By: Hypron|| Oct 14, 2023
Martin “Rekkles” Larsson, one of the most iconic and successful players in European League of Legends history, has announced his departure from fnatic, the team he has been associated with for almost a decade. Rekkles, who is widely regarded as the best AD carry in Europe and one of the best in the world, has decided to switch roles and pursue a new challenge as a support player in the LEC.
Rekkles Journey in Fnatic
Rekkles joined Fnatic in 2012 as a 16-year-old prodigy and quickly established himself as a star player and a fan favorite. He helped Fnatic win four LEC titles, reach the World Championship semifinals twice, and become one of the most dominant and consistent teams in the region. Rekkles also won several individual awards, such as the LEC MVP in 2017 and 2020, and was selected for the All-Pro Team nine times.
However, Rekkles’ career was not without its ups and downs. He briefly left fnatic in 2015 to join Alliance (later Elements) but returned after a disappointing split. He also faced criticism for his passive playstyle and champion pool, especially during international tournaments. In 2021, he made a shocking move to join G2 Esports, Fnatic’s archrival and reigning LEC champion. However, this partnership did not live up to the expectations, as G2 failed to win any trophies and missed the World Championship for the first time since 2016.
Rekkles returned to fnatic in 2023, hoping to reclaim his glory and lead the team to success. However, he was soon replaced by Oh “Noah” Hyeon-taek, a rookie from Korea, just before the Summer Split. Rekkles was relegated to the academy team, where he experimented with different roles and champions. He eventually settled on the support role, which he felt suited his personality, skills, and vision of the game better than the AD carry role.

Rekkles announced his departure from fnatic on October 12, 2023, expressing his gratitude to the organization and his fans for their support over the years. He also revealed his plans for the future, stating that he wants to play as a support in the LEC and compete at the highest level again. He said that he has been practicing hard for the past five months and that he believes he can contribute more to a team’s success as a support than as an AD carry.
Rekkles’ departure marks the end of an era for fnatic and European League of Legends. He is one of the most legendary and influential players in the scene, having inspired countless fans and aspiring players with his passion, dedication, and skill. He is also one of the few players who have stayed loyal to one region and one team for most of their career. His legacy will be remembered for years to come.
Hey hey!

As you may or may not have heard, I'm no longer a part of Fnatic. It saddens me that we weren't able to make things work this year, but also makes me happy to see them succeed during summer and qualify for Worlds. With Trymbi and Noah both doing really well since… pic.twitter.com/2zAazkAmfJ
However, Rekkles’ departure also opens up new possibilities and opportunities for him and his potential teammates. Rekkles has shown that he is not afraid to take risks and try new things, even if it means leaving behind his comfort zone and his reputation. He has also shown that he is still hungry for success and improvement, even after achieving so much in his career. He has a clear goal in mind: to win another LEC title and reach the World Championship finals again.
Rekkles’ future is uncertain at this point, as he has not revealed which team he will join or if he has any offers at all. The offseason has just begun, and many changes are expected to happen among teams in Europe and around the world. Rekkles may have to wait for a while before finding his new home, or he may have to prove himself again in a lower-tier league or tournament. Whatever happens, Rekkles’ fans will be eagerly waiting for his return to the LEC stage, where he will face new challenges and old rivals as a support player.
