On May 13, VCT Pacific league giants DRX suffered their first loss of the regular season. They not only bled but they were swept in a 2-0 loss to Team Secret, a shocking result in the region’s super week.

DRX was 7-0 heading into this duel, while Team Secret was 3-4. Team Secret needed to win this match in order to qualify for Masters Tokyo, and they did it, shocking many with their performance on Haven in particular.

While it might be simple to just say that DRX were underperforming, that wasn’t the case in this series. Team Secret truly stepped up to DRX’s level, as evidenced by their 13-8 triumph over Haven to take a 1-0 lead in the series. In-game leader Jessie “JessieVash” Cristy Cuyco for the good calls to counter-act DRX’s set plays on both attack and defense, Jim “BORKUM” Timbreza for some crucial kills, and Jeremy “Jremy” Cabrera for stepping up against tough opposition, playing very different roles in Duelist and Sentinel on two different maps and tying for most kills on their team over the series.

When Ascent came out as the second map, DRX launched an aggressive offensive, leading 9-3 at halftime. Nonetheless, the 9-3 curse came true, even on a map that DRX has established its reputation on over the years. Jremy and JessieVash continued their good form from Haven, as Team Secret only lost two rounds on their attack. Both teams clearly prepared for this series, as neither team lost a post-plant scenario when assaulting the crucial map. DRX was nine for nine in-round wins, but Team Secret was ten for ten.

In a post-match interview, JessieVash praised his team’s performance against the best regional opponent conceivable, particularly their map win on Haven.

“We watched a lot of DRX’s Haven, especially when they lost that map to RRQ,” said JessieVash, “so we just adapted to that, that was the secret.”

Even with this tremendous triumph and some tears on stage, JessieVash realized they still had more big moments ahead of them to make it to Masters Tokyo.”

“I believe this victory will instill more confidence in our players, particularly those who have had poor performances in recent events.” “We just need to be more consistent,” stated JessieVash. “We have already reviewed [Global Esports], and we expect to win the next games so that we can make the playoffs.”
