Long-time League of Legends player-turned-coach Bae “Bengi” Seong-Woong announced his resignation from T1 on July 7 and would leave the organization at the end of the current LCK Summer Season.

T1’s general manager Becker Jung signed the news on Twitter, thanking Bengi for a “remarkable” journey with the organization as both team jungler and head coach. “His dedication, commitment, and inspiring legacy have left an indelible mark on T1,” Jung added.

In the meanwhile, I’m “Tom” Jae-Hyeon will serve as the team’s interim head coach for the rest of the 2023 season, including the current LCK split and any international commitments, including the World Championships in South Korea in October 2023 if T1 qualifies.

Bengi joined T1, formerly SK Telecom T1, in February 2013 as the team’s starting jungler. Along with Faker, he was instrumental in the team’s epic run from 2013 to 2017, which featured three Worlds wins and a fourth grand final appearance.

He left to join Vici Gaming before retiring as a player and returned to T1 in 2018 as a coach. He resigned down as coach after one season, only to reappear in late 2020, this time as coach of T1’s Challenger side.

Bengi would lead the team to a strong title win in the 2021 LCK CL Spring Season before falling to tenth place in the Summer. Bengi would take over as T1’s main head coach in September 2022, replacing Polt just a month before Worlds.

Bengi and T1 would finish another Worlds grand final together, falling short to DRX in the grand final. Despite a second-place performance in LCK Spring 2023 and a third-place finish at MSI 2023, his efforts landed him the role of head coach for 2023.

However, Bengi’s resignation caps off a terrible month for the organization, which has included a disappointing start to the LCK Summer Season, a swath of fan criticism following defeats, and a hand injury to Faker that has ruled the star mid-laner out permanently.

At 1am CT, new interim head coach Tom and T1 will take to the Rift versus LCK ladder leaders Gen.G.
