Sentinels Dropped Their Fortnite Roster, Leaving them Teamless
By: Hypron || Dec 29, 2022
It’s rare to see an esports organisation willingly let go of a world champion, let alone one in a hugely popular title. But that’s the reality of the esports industry right now, and Sentinels is no exception.
Sentinels’ CEO, Rob Moore, announced today that the organisation is abandoning competitive Fortnite entirely. He went on to say that all of the organization’s Fortnite payers, including Nick “Aspect” McGuire, Brian “Zyfa” Wielgolaski, and, most notably, 2019 Fortnite World Cup solos champion Kyle “Bugha” Giersdorf, will not be re-signed after 2023.
Bugha won $3 million for winning the World Cup and was the first big name to compete under the Sentinels banner. He is now a free agent in 2023.
Today is my last day as SEN Bugha.

I’ll forever be grateful for the opportunity over the last 3 years.
While this is the end of an era and memorable chapter of my career — this also starts an exciting new one in 2023. ✍🏻
Thank you, @sentinels
Moore stated that Sentinels’ esports strategy moving forward is to “focus on games that provide the opportunity to activate for our sponsors or offer team-branded in-game content,” which explains why the team is leaving such a notable player behind. That opportunity is not provided by Fortnite, either in the game or through Epic-hosted LAN events where Sentinels jerseys and apparel flash team sponsors to cameras and crowds. Epic has given no indication that there will be another World Cup after the one in 2019, with the end of 2022 marking a full three years after Bugha’s victory.
Sentinels have teams in Halo, Apex Legends, and VALORANT without a presence in Fortnite. Official esports tournaments are run in all three games, at least in collaboration with their developer or publisher, and Halo and Apex have both previously provided content in their games that represented participating esports organisations.
The move reflects the current state of the esports ecosystem. With outside investment drying up, many organisations are reducing their esports teams and focusing on games that provide organisations with support and the ability to monetize their presence in a given title. While Fortnite is still a hugely popular game with a large player base, it doesn’t offer many of these opportunities. And, more importantly, it may not need to because the game works perfectly well with all of the collaborations and events it hosts.
Sentinels are no longer available. And, based on current trends, it may not be the only organisation to exit Fortnite in the near future. On the other hand, if any organisation is looking for some big-name Fortnite players to make a splash in the scene, there is currently at least one excellent option.
