MrBeast, one of the most popular and influential YouTubers in the world, has recently announced a partnership with Samsung, making the Galaxy S23 Ultra his official vlog camera. However, not everyone is happy with this deal, as some media outlets and critics have accused him of being a sellout and a ploy for Samsung to target the younger generation. MrBeast has responded to these allegations, defending his sponsorship and claiming that Samsung is getting a great deal from him.

What is the sponsorship about?

MrBeast, whose real name is Jimmy Donaldson, is known for his extravagant and philanthropic videos, where he often gives away huge sums of money, cars, houses, and other prizes to his friends, fans, and strangers. He has over 176 million subscribers on YouTube and billions of views on his videos. He is also the founder of Team Trees, a campaign that raised over $20 million to plant 20 million trees around the world.

On September 23, 2023, MrBeast uploaded a video titled “I Spent $1,000,000 On Lottery Tickets and Won”, where he revealed that he had partnered with Samsung and that the Galaxy S23 Ultra was his official vlog camera. He also gave away 100 of these phones to random people on the street and showed off some of the features of the device, such as the 8K video recording, the 108 MP camera, and the 100x zoom.

The video has over 100 million views as of October 2, 2023, and is sponsored by Samsung. According to MrBeast, this is not a one-time deal, but a long-term partnership that will last for at least a year.

Why did it spark controversy?

The sponsorship deal between MrBeast and Samsung has sparked some controversy among some media outlets and critics, who have questioned the motives and ethics behind it. For example, The Verge published an article titled “Samsung’s partnership with MrBeast is a ploy to get Gen Z to buy its phones”, where it argued that Samsung was using MrBeast as a marketing tool to appeal to the younger generation and compete with Apple. The article also suggested that Mr. Beast was compromising his creative integrity and authenticity by promoting a product that he may not actually use or like.

The article received backlash from many fans and fellow YouTubers, who defended Mr. Beast and Samsung and criticized The Verge for being condescending and biased. Austin Evans, a tech YouTuber with over 5 million subscribers, tweeted: “The tone of this article is so condescending. There’s nothing wrong with Samsung sponsoring the most popular YouTuber in the world. I bet whatever they paid @MrBeast is a better ROI than the Samsung ads on The Verge.”

Other critics also pointed out that Mr. Beast’s video quality seemed to have degraded after switching to the Galaxy S23 Ultra, claiming that the phone was not suitable for professional vlogging. Some also accused Mr. Beast of being greedy and selling out to Samsung for money.

How did MrBeast respond?

MrBeast did not stay silent about the controversy surrounding his sponsorship deal with Samsung. He took to Twitter to address some of the criticisms and explain his reasoning behind the partnership.

He tweeted: “That video will probably get 400,000,000 views. The cost per impression for Samsung is arguably the best in the world lol.”2 He also added: “I’ve been using their phones for months now (even before they paid me) I genuinely love them.”3

He also clarified that he was not forced to use the Galaxy S23 Ultra as his only camera, but that he chose to do so because he liked it. He said, “I can use whatever camera I want. I just like using their phone because it’s convenient.”4

He also thanked his fans for their support and said that he was grateful for the opportunity to work with Samsung. He said, “Thank you guys for all the love on today’s video! I’m super thankful Samsung gave me this opportunity. 5

MrBeast has shown that he is not afraid to stand up for himself and his sponsorship deal with Samsung. He has also proven that he is still one of the most successful and influential YouTubers in the world, who can attract millions of views and loyal fans with his content. Whether or not his partnership with Samsung will affect his future videos remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: MrBeast is not going anywhere anytime soon.
