Which Is Steam's Most Played Game, Cyberpunk Tops The Rank

In case you missed it, Steam recently announced the Best of Steam 2021, an internal ranking on the digital distribution platform of top sellers by gross revenue, titles deemed “most played” by peak concurrent players, and so on. That shouldn’t come as a surprise. What is surprising is that, despite all of its widely publicised flaws and the fact that it was released in December 2020, CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077 managed to rank in more than one category.

More specifically, Cyberpunk 2077 is in the top tier of the most-played games, with over 200,000 peak players, and while it did not quite make the Platinum tier for top sellers, it is only a minor drop to Silver. Given that the top sellers in this category were determined by gross revenue, it should come as no surprise that a number of titles above it include major DLC, expansions, or in-game microtransactions. As a single-player title, Cyberpunk 2077’s inclusion so close to the top of the heap appears to be a huge success.

To be clear, none of this is a value judgement on the quality of Cyberpunk 2077. It simply means that a large number of people played the game at the same time, and that a large number of people spent money on the video game. Steam’s measurement of all of this is fairly opaque, with no direct numbers attached beyond a few benchmarks here and there, making it impossible to directly compare it to any other title. However, it appears safe to conclude that, despite its flaws, Cyberpunk 2077 was one of the most popular video games on Steam in 2021. The question now is whether this will be the case in 2022.

Cyberpunk 2077 itself is currently available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Google Stadia, and PC.
