Sentinels was defeated in dramatic fashion by Version1 in their second consecutive playoff series at NA VCT Challengers One. They are out of contention for Masters Reykjavik and will miss playing at an international VALORANT LAN for the first time in their history.

Sentinels took a commanding lead in the series with their own pick of Haven, aided by a monster performance from TenZ on Jett. TenZ has been hot and cold throughout Challengers One, with a combined 34 kills over four maps in Sentinels’ group stage match against V1 and their first playoff match against The Guard. Today, he had 31 kills against V1 on Haven alone, delivering in every setup his teammates set up for him and carrying the load in a 13-7 win.

Version1 appeared to be on their way to a rout on Ascent early on, jumping out to a 5-0 lead on their attacking side. However, the Sentinels rallied on defence, with TenZ waking up and the team as a whole punishing V1’s slow style of play with fast rotations, resulting in a 6-6 tie at halftime. However, V1 demonstrated why they chose Ascent for defence by slamming the door on Sentinels’ site takes. Both teams battled hard in the second half, but V1 took care of business by catching off flanks and choking off post-plant spots during their own retakes to win 13-9 and send the series to Fracture.

The series was decided in the second half of Fracture, when both teams were tied 6-6 after penny highlighted V1’s attack side with some big plays on the Op and Chamber’s Tour De Force. Early in the second half, ShahZaM kept V1 from pulling away, but a sly thrifty round from V1 shattered the Sentinels’ momentum and economy. V1 punished the Sentinels on defence, winning the series and ensuring their playoff survival with a 13-8 victory.

Given Sentinels’ NA dominance throughout 2021 and Version1’s rock solid 5-0 group stage run this year, the meeting of Sentinels and Version1 in this part of the bracket was certainly a surprise to viewers. However, according to ShahZaM, the Sentinels have not been playing their best VALORANT, and must now rediscover that before the start of Stage Two.

Version 1’s journey is far from over. They still need to win three straight series just to get to Iceland, and their next opponent, Cloud9, is a familiar foe.
