On Monday, Gambit Esports issued a statement announcing that their VALORANT team will compete as an independent squad in the VALORANT Champions tour. The Gambit players have stated that they will compete in the next VCT matches in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa under the name MC3, which stands for Masters 3 Champions.

“During this time, esports can continue to serve fans from many different countries and cultures — and we sincerely hope that tournaments continue and players focus on competition and sportsmanship,” Gambit said in a statement. “As a result, we’ve decided to allow our players, [Igor “Redgar” Vlasov], [Timofey “Chronicle” Khromov], [Nikita “d3ffo” Sudakov], [Bogdan “Sheydos” Naumov], and [Ayaz “nAts” Akhmetshin], to compete as an independent team in the upcoming VCT Competition.”

The former Gambit Esports team has not competed in an official EMEA VCT match since a loss to FunPlus Phoenix on February 18. This is just one of many moves that teams with organisations or players from Russia and Ukraine have had to make in order to compete in esports. VCT EMEA was postponed for a week at the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and Natus Vincere, a Ukrainian-based organisation with Russian players, did not participate in the first weekend of matches after the postponement.

Kyrylo “ANGE1” Karasov, an FPX player who is Ukrainian and lived in the country at the start of the conflict, has been unable to play with the team. In their most recent matches, FPX has used a substitute.

Virtus.pro, a Russian government-affiliated organisation like Gambit, has also allowed their Counter-Strike: Global Offensive players to compete as an independent team during ESL Pro League Season 15. Unlike Gambit, ESL issued a statement ahead of time prohibiting teams with ties to the Russian government from participating and provided organisations with the option of sending their teams as independent. Riot Games has not made any broad statements about Russian esports organisations competing in its tournaments.

Riot has also released the remainder of the VCT EMEA schedule now that the Gambit players have returned to the competition.
