After defeating M3C, formerly known as Gambit, Fnatic became the first team from Europe, the Middle East, and Africa to qualify for the 2022 VALORANT Champions Tour Masters 1 in Reykjavik, Iceland. They defeated the 2021 VCT Masters 3 champions in an incredibly close 2-1 series, winning 23-21 after 44 rounds on Split.

Fnatic vs. M3C was always going to be an emotional series because Fnatic defeated Gambit the last time the two met on the road to qualify for the 2021 VCT Masters 2. And once again, after a one-hour-and-42-minute map 3, with M3C milliseconds away from taking the win, Fnatic drew the winning straw.

The score was 1-1 after Fracture and Bind. Split had to settle the score because the two teams were evenly matched. Fnatic appeared to be running away with the game at first, but they went into the second half with the dreaded 9-3 score.

Despite Fnatic winning the next pistol round and being in a strong position to win the series, M3C took Fnatic’s bonus round. This shift eventually spiralled out of control, resulting in a 12-12 tie. Fans thought it was almost over, but overtime continued for 20 more rounds. Fnatic stayed close in overtime, initially chasing M3C before blowing their leads several times.

M3C was just microseconds away from winning at one point. It was up to Fnatic’s Andrey “BraveAF” Gorchakov to kill or delay Nikita “d3ffo” Sudakov in a 1v1 on attack. He died in the attempt, but it appeared that d3ffo had just enough time to defuse the spike and punch M3C’s ticket to Reykjavik. Despite the apparent complete defuse, which arrived just in time to end the series, the spike exploded.

After 12 more rounds, Fnatic was the only team to qualify for Masters 1: Reykjavik. In the post-match interview, Fnatic in-game leader Jake “Boaster” Howlett was overjoyed.

After 12 more rounds, Fnatic was the only team to qualify for Masters 1: Reykjavik. In the post-match interview, Fnatic in-game leader Jake “Boaster” Howlett was overjoyed.

“I’m at least 54 years old now,” Boaster said. “Honestly, at 19-19, I was like, you know what? I’m fine with losing, but we kept going.”

Fnatic will return to familiar territory after qualifying for Iceland. They came in second place at the 2021 VCT Masters 2 to Sentinels, who did not qualify for the event this time.
