T1 won the first quarterfinals match at Worlds 2021, defeating Hanwha Life Esports in a 3-0 rout. The team dominated the series from start to finish, leaving no room for HLE. Given how close these teams were in the LCK regional finals, T1’s demolition of HLE demonstrates how far they have come. It also sets up an exciting and intense semifinal series.

T1 advances to the semi-finals with this victory and will face the winner of the DWG KIA vs. MAD Lions series. Meanwhile, HLE exits the tournament after advancing from the group stage after clawing their way out of play-ins.

T1 vs HLE at Worlds 2021

T1 started Game 1 of the best-of-five series on the blue side, prioritising the Graves pick. They also prohibited Sylas and Leblanc, giving Jeong “Chovy” Ji-hoon fewer options in the mid lane. To prevent Lee “Faker” Sang-hyeok from taking over the game, HLE responded with a Twisted Fate and Ryze ban. Their failure to focus on Lee “Gumayusi” Min-Apehlios, hyung’s on the other hand, proved costly, as T1 focused the majority of their resources on the champion.

Gumayusi terrorised the bot lane and team fights as a result of this decision. In the first game, he also went deathless, with a 3/0/6 Kill/Death/Assist Ratio.

Furthermore, HLE made the same error in the draught in Game 2 by failing to ban Apehilos. T1 had a much better lane matchup this time, with HLE’s bot side on Varus and Nautilus. Varus’ selection by HLE was surprising, given that the champion had yet to compete at Worlds 2021. Furthermore, since its nerf in Patch 11.19, the champion has had little success on the rift.

The abysmal performance of Kim “Deft” Hyuk-kyu on Varus demonstrated why the champion was not a tournament favourite. He had no positive impact, particularly in team fights, and finished the game with a 1/2/0 KDA. T1’s Gwen and Poppy combination in the top lane and jungle also prevented HLE from gaining an advantage on that side of the map. In the third game, HLE chose Varus into Aphelios again, and the result was the same as the previous time: a T1 victory.

T1 moved to semifinals where they will face another Chinese Giants EDG.
