Despite starting the 2021 League of Legends season as clear underdogs in the vast landscape of the LPL, Royal Never Give Up now have an international title to show for their efforts during the Spring Split.

A few weeks ago, DWG was regarded as the world’s strongest uncontested team. But it has been clear that the LPL’s best was the best, both after a hot string of matches from RNG and a few slip-ups from the world champions. When RNG finished its historic MSI race, the team posted a total record of 21-6, one of the best winning rates for any team in the history of the event.

DWG entered the series fresh off a hard-fought match against MAD Lions less than 24 hours before. RNG, on the other hand, were playing on a full day’s rest after easily defeating PSG Talon in their semifinal match on Friday. It’s unclear if the difference in rest played a role in today’s match, but it’s obvious RNG activated a certain aspect of flair DWG couldn’t seem to locate in the sequence.

DWG was utterly outmatched by the end of the series. In stark contrast to the first four games of the season, which were fiercely contested, RNG dominated the final game of the match, winning by a final kill score of 27-9.

Gala, RNG’s AD carry, was named Finals MVP after posting a five-game scoreline of 37/9/22, good for a total KDA of 6.5. Gala’s signature champion, Kai’Sa, was a recurring theme in all five games today. Gala was the champion in all five of today’s games, contributing to the long list of times when he has found success with the Daughter of the Void. In reality, Gala has played Kai’Sa 37 times this season, which is nearly as many as the rest of his champion pool combined across RNG’s 80 games.

Despite the unfortunate outcome, ShowMaker stood out as a key performer for DWG KIA on the other side of the stage in today’s series. His champion pool’s incredible diversity was a lynchpin in DWG’s winning moments. In all five games, the former LCK MVP faced five separate champions. ShowMaker was notable for playing nine different champions in the bracket level, a feat highlighted by the first Xerath selection in major region play this season.

DWG KIA will now return to the LCK level, where it will begin defending its spring title next month. The team cruised through domestic play this past split with a total game record of 39-10 against their fellow Korean rivals, but they will need to improve if they are to win a second World Championship in a row.
