DWG KIA eliminated MAD Lions from Worlds 2021 with a 3-0 win in the quarterfinals series. With a quick series against MAD, the South Korean tournament favourites showed no signs of slowing down. DK is also undefeated in Worlds, with a 9-0 record. With this victory, DK advances to their second consecutive semifinals and keeps their hopes of winning the Summoner’s Cup for the second year in a row alive. They are set to face their regional rivals, T1, in what appears to be a rematch of the League of Legends Champions Korea summer finals.

Meanwhile, MAD’s withdrawal from the tournament means that there will be no European teams competing at Worlds 2021. It also means that Cloud9 is the tournament’s final Western team.

To no one’s surprise, DWG KIA started Game 1 with a much better early game. Their Syndra Lee Sin combo in the middle of the jungle paid off, as they were able to keep MAD under their turret for the majority of the game. In the top lane, MAD’s Irfan “Armut” Tukek struggled against DWG KIA’s Kim “Khan” Dong-ha. DK finished the game with a 10,000 gold lead after capturing all neutral objectives.

Furthermore, unlike Game 1, MAD started Game 2 on a high note, with successful repeated ganks on Khan in the top lane. They were able to convert this into an overall map advantage and were approximately 4,000 gold ahead in the mid-game. However, MAD ignored Khan’s potential Kennen flank and were punished in a baron fight as a result. Following this, DK fought their way back into the game, eventually finishing it thanks to a heroic ultimate from Khan.

The final game of the series was heavily favoured by DK, with MAD attempting to gain small advantages around neutral objectives. All of their efforts, however, were in vain, as DK eventually won the series.

While DWG are the defending World champions,  T1 are still the most successful teams in Worlds history.
