Cloud9 Defeated Team Liquid In LCS 2021, Heading To Finals

After many weeks of regular season at the top of the League of Legends Spring for 2021 Split, Cloud9 eventually overcame Team Liquid in its second best of five series of the LCS Mid-Season Showdown.

It’s been a long time since Cloud9 defeated Liquid in the best atmosphere with its new Spring Split playoff win in 2015. Stars, Meteos, Hai, Sly and LemonNation all brought their opponents down in five games. However, only four games were taken in Cloud9 this year.

Cloud9 has shown a different degree of macro-knowledge in the mid to late game over Liquid in the series. They outplayed their rivals in most scenarios, whether they were a Kalista early game or Ryze and Jinx late-game squad compañeros.
They also shut down the Alphari superstar laner of Liquid which Blaber was constantly on the road. In-Game One, in which All-Pro died 3 times in 15 minutes, was the perfect example of this early domination.

Even though Cloud9 dropped early, the team has found ways to reverse and reduce the gold trail. In Game Three, Perkz and his team were placed behind by several lane ganks. Fortunately, the team remained together and made some big picks around the map to close the gap until they were in a position to strike back with a big teamfight.

Eventually, Liquid struggled to exert their will against Cloud9 in the early game, which is normally their strongest team feature. The liquid was considered as the most dominant early team in the league during the regular season, with an average gold differential of 2,096 at 15 minutes, but they were never able to accumulate such a huge gold lead over the four games.

Although Cloud9 has already secured their place in the 2021 MSS Finals, Liquid must earn their spot by facing the winner of TSM vs. 100 Thieves. The matchup will take place tomorrow at 3 p.m. CT.
