Activision has banned 350,000 gamers from Call of Duty: Warzone, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, and Call of Duty: Mobile for “racist names and destructive behaviour.” These measures were derived from an examination of the player-name database as well as player reports. While the bans should be a good first step toward creating a more inviting environment in all of Activision’s Call of Duty games, the publisher has also revealed a number of other efforts to combat racism, sexism, harassment, and other forms of toxicity.

Activision has also added new in-game filters to catch more racist user names, profiles, and clan tags, in addition to the bans. In addition, new technologies will be developed to filter racist phrases used in text chat. Filters have also been added in 11 different languages.

The publisher isn’t done yet. The purpose of Activision is to give players more reporting tools. It also hopes to reduce toxicity in voice chat and improve communication with the Call of Duty community, among other things. It would be hard for any publisher to eradicate racism, misogyny, and toxic behavior entirely, but Activision’s initiatives might significantly reduce problems in the Call of Duty community.

Video games are a form of escapism for those who like them, and everyone should be able to do so without fear of harassment. Hopefully, these actions will have a significant influence on the problem.

COD: Warzone is available now on the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
