It’s time for a new banner to be hung in the LCS studio. 100 Thieves won the 2021 LCS Championship by defeating Team Liquid in a best-of-five series by a score of three games to zero. The victory of 100 Thieves today marked the first time in the LCS’s eight-year history that a team other than the league’s “big four”—Cloud9, TSM, Team Liquid, and CLG—had won a championship.

When the LCS introduced franchising in 2018, 100 Thieves became the league’s first expansion team. The team reached the LCS Grand Finals in the organization’s first competitive League of Legends split but ultimately lost a one-sided series to Team Liquid, who won their first-ever LCS title that day. Three years later, the tables were turned poetically, and 100 Thieves broke the North American mould for the first time since that time.

Team Liquid entered today’s best-of-five series on a high note. Despite being the fifth seed in the LCS playoff bracket, the team had won all of its previous postseason matches prior to today’s Grand Final.

Team Liquid had won three consecutive matches in the postseason’s upper bracket, as well as nine of the 13 individual games they had played during the playoffs. The last time Team Liquid faced 100 Thieves in the bracket, Liquid won 3-2, but 100 Thieves would not be denied today.

As a result of their victory, 100 Thieves earned a spot in Pool One at the 2021 League of Legends World Championship. With that in mind, they’ll advance to the Group Stage of the tournament, beating out other regional champions like MAD Lions and DWG KIA in the process. 100 Thieves have not competed at Worlds since 2018, when they were eliminated in the Group Stage.

Team Liquid, on the other hand, will still compete in the Worlds Group Stage, albeit as a Pool Two team alongside Gen.G, Fnatic, and PSG Talon. Last year, Liquid had to battle their way through the Worlds Play-in Stage before making it to the Quarterfinals.
